Artist Statement
I love the idea of obscurity and finding something admirable about it. Within my works, I hope to accomplish introducing a new perspective of the parallel between beauty and darkness to my audience. By using the ‘monotone’ setting in my camera for most of my figurative photos, I hope to portray a sort of ‘dark side’ in my works but also juxtaposing beauty from people as my subjects. Adding creativity behind my works is always a challenge. Having the right props such as mirrors, cling wrap, masks, etc and using photoshop adds to the creativity. The many photographers that inspire and influence me greatly include Molly Porter, Piermarco Menin, MD Tanveer Rohan, Karyn Fearnside, Dara Scully and Sally Mann. Sally Mann is my ultimate influence because her goal in her photos is almost the same as mine. We want others to find a uniqueness to the obscurity of our photos. I love her theme of darkness and creepiness which is all I want to be apart of my photos as well.
“I like to make people a little uncomfortable. It encourages them to examine who they are and why they think the way they do”
-Sally Mann
This quote inspires me to challenge myself and broaden my knowledge of photography. I hope to make people question my photos and discover a new perspective of absurd beauty.
Karyn Fearnside has a very unique dark side to her photos. I love the props she utilizes such as cloth and from this, I use them as well. My plan is to use glass with water droplets in my work just like MD Tanveer Rohan. Molly Porter and Piermarco Menini are other influences with a different theme I would like to try out. I’ve always wanted to try street and fashion and I hope to follow these influences because of their unique use of their surroundings and poses. I wish to broaden my knowledge of photography from following these people.
The process of my photographs always start with figuring out the right setting my subject must be at. Whether it would be lying on the floor or leaning on a wall, I try to keep them still with their prop. I move around my subject as much as possible and try to take my photos in all angles. After shooting these photos, I use photoshop in order to colorize a part of the photos. I still try to keep the photos as simple as possible by only adding in one or two colors on a certain spot in a few photos.
Since I’m young, I still don’t know where the direction of my photography is heading. As I search and learn about new photographers that inspire me, I hope one day I can inspire others as well. I just want people to know that there will always be something positive in a field of negativity.
